How to Keep Your Phone Quiet With a Sleeping Baby (or Partner)
The baby is finally asleep and you reach for your phone. Simple habits that stop the first video from playing at this afternoon's volume.

The baby is finally asleep, or your partner has drifted off next to you, and you reach for your phone for a few quiet minutes. Then the first video starts at the volume you used this afternoon. Here's how to keep your phone quiet with a sleeping baby or partner nearby, without giving up your evening scroll.
Why the first video is the one that catches you out
By the tenth video you have already found a comfortable level. The surprise almost always comes from the first one, because of the gap between when you last set the volume and when you pick up the phone in the dark.
During the day you might turn the volume up to hear a video over the kitchen fan, a podcast on the bus or a cartoon for a toddler. Hours later the media volume is still there. Open YouTube, Instagram or TikTok in a silent bedroom, and the first clip plays at that daytime level.
Your phone doesn't know the room has changed. It plays at the last media volume it remembers.
Media volume vs everything else
This article is about media volume: videos, music, browsers and social apps. Ringtone and notification sounds are separate settings in your phone's sound settings. If message sounds are the problem at night, check those sliders separately. Turning one down doesn't change the others.
Simple habits that work
Step 1: Lower the media volume before you settle in
Do it at the door or before you lie down, not after a video has started. Press volume down until the media slider is low. Turning it up a step is easy if it's too quiet. Reacting once something plays loud is much harder.
Step 2: Use earbuds or headphones
For night-time scrolling, earbuds keep the sound to yourself. Keep a charged pair by the bed.
One thing to know: Android remembers a separate media volume for the phone speaker and for headphones or Bluetooth. Check the level after you connect them. And when you take them out, pause first, because the speaker will use its own level.
Step 3: Glance at the volume before opening a video app
One press of a volume key shows you where you are. On some Samsung phones the volume keys change the ringtone unless something is playing; the volume settings have an option along the lines of "Use Volume keys for media" that changes this.
Step 4: Take your phone back at a low volume
If the kids watched cartoons on your phone earlier, turn it down when you get it back, before bedtime rather than after.
Step 5: Limit autoplay where you can
Some apps let you limit autoplay or feed previews in their settings. Names and options vary between app versions, but it's worth a look in the apps you use most at night. Our guide to stopping videos from autoplaying loud lists what to look for.
A quick evening routine
- 1.Before you lie down, press volume down until the media slider is low.
- 2.If you use earbuds, connect them and check the level again.
- 3.Open your app and let the first video start quietly. Turn it up a step if needed.
- 4.When you're done, leave the volume low. Tomorrow's first video starts there too.
For the nights you forget
Habits slip when you're tired, and late at night is exactly when that happens. SoundAlert is built for that moment.
You choose the apps you use at night, such as YouTube, Instagram or TikTok, and set a limit. While one of those apps is open, SoundAlert checks the media volume about once a second. If it's above your limit, it lowers it to your chosen level automatically, within about a second. The Quiet preset sets the limit to 30%, and the default reduce-to level is 15%.
- •It changes media volume only, never ringtone, calls, notifications or alarms.
- •Since version 1.0.5 it lowers the volume silently, with a short on-screen confirmation.
- •It uses no microphone or camera, and the monitoring works offline.
- •It works on the volume setting, so a video that is loud in itself at a low setting isn't caught.
With PRO, Emergency Mode adds a button that mutes media. Calls and alarms keep ringing, and Restore brings your previous level back.
The FREE version covers one app with unlimited auto-reduce, which is enough if there's one app you always reach for in bed. Get SoundAlert on Google Play.
